University of British Columbia - Aquatic Centre
EAC was thrilled to be invited back to The University of British Columbia to conduct a walk-and-roll accessibility review with Adrian Greszata, Senior Manager at the UBC Aquatic Centre.
This facility is truly impressive. One of the standout features is that both the lap pool and leisure pool include built-in ramp access, eliminating the need for pool lifts altogether. Accessibility here is clearly woven into the original design, not added as an afterthought. Even the hot tub is thoughtfully designed, featuring an elevator that takes patrons directly down into the water.
The Aquatic Centre also offers weekly sensory swims, a program that continues to grow in popularity. During these sessions, lights are dimmed, music and LED screens are turned off, and window blinds are lowered to create a calmer, more inclusive environment.
Thank you to UBC for championing accessibility and inclusive design. We look forward to continuing our collaboration!
